5 Reasons We Love Yellow Springs, Ohio
Ohio is home to a number of charming small towns, but perhaps one of my favorites is Yellow Springs. Located just east of Dayton and just over an hour from Columbus, Yellow Springs is a perfect day trip or weekend getaway for the artsy adventurer.
Here are 5 reasons we love Yellow Springs, Ohio.
Craft Beer.
Chris and I have been aboard the craft beer train ever since we started dating and one of our all-time favorite spots to visit in Ohio is Yellow Springs Brewery. Located close to town, Yellow Springs Brewery offers a nice-sized beer list including several collaborations with other Ohio brewers. Some of our go-to’s are Zoetic (American Pale Ale) and Boat Show (IPA). Their taproom is equal parts fun and whimsical complete with board games and brew tours happening Saturdays at 5 p.m. for $10.
Don’t miss their rotating food truck parked out front every day. Last time we visited we indulged on Arancini and BBQ croquettes from Hunger Paynes, a tasty food truck out of the Dayton area.
TIP: Yellow Springs Brewery is located directly along a bike path and Yellow Springs as a whole is very cycle-friendly so definitely bring your bike!
Yellow Springs Brewery is located at 305 N. Walnut St., Yellow Springs, OH.
Natural Wonders.
Just outside of the downtown area is John Bryan State Park, a 752-acre park that will remind you of the Hocking Hills (just without the crowds). During our visit, we hiked the Pine Forest Trail that follows Yellow Springs Creek with giant limestone formations on either side - a great trail if you’re a nature photog.
Also in the area, Glen Helen Nature Preserve, the Glen Helen Ecology Institute and Raptor Center.
TIP: The Instagrammer in me would be remiss to not inform you that a stunning sunflower field blooms in the late summer at the Tecumseh Land Trust. You can find more information about it here.
The main entrance to John Bryan State Park is located at 3790 State Route 370 Yellow Springs, Ohio 45387.
Shops.
Shopping in Yellow Springs is both surprising and fun. With everything from hand-made jewelry to home goods and everything in between, you’re bound to come home with treasures for the whole family.
Our favorites: Emporium Wines, Wildflower Boutique (for boho clothes), Epic Book Shop and Asanda Import Ltd.
Artistic Charm.
One of our favorite things about Yellow Springs is the artistic influence. Arts and culture are everywhere and I literally mean, everywhere. Even the trash cans are decorated to the nines with an artistic flair and you can catch live music every night of the week (see venues below).
Peach’s Grill
Underdog Cafe
Dayton Street Gulch
TIP: Every spring and fall the streets come alive for a day in celebration during the Yellow Springs Street Fair. Enjoy live music, made-local shopping and more on June 13 and October 10, 2020. Learn more here.
Proximity to Ohio attractions.
All of your ice cream dreams come true at Young’s Jersey Dairy just a short way from Yellow Springs. Young's Jersey Dairy has been in business for more than 150 years - a huge testament to their quality and service. Not an ice cream fan? Not to worry. Young’s also offers fair-style foods (I recommend the fried cheese curds) and activities for the whole family like feeding the goats (which was a huge hit with my nephew) and Udders & Putters mini golf.
Also in the area - Clifton Mill (four miles from downtown), National Museum of the U.S. Air Force (12 miles from downtown).
Yellow Springs is the perfect Ohio getaway for a laid back, artistic escape. Have you been?
